Before you give an AI app a document

Check where the document is processed, what the app can access and how you will verify the answer. A plausible summary is not proof that every detail is correct.

Begin with a harmless sample

Use a public or non-sensitive document for the first test. Include a few details you can check quickly: a date, a table entry and a short passage with a clear conclusion.

Ask the app to show its work

Request page references or short supporting passages where the app can provide them. Open the original document and verify the references. If the answer includes a quotation, compare it with the source rather than relying on the generated text.

Check the data path

Confirm the selected model, remote providers and any online tools. LM Studio documents local processing for its document-chat workflow; that statement does not establish the behaviour of every app or connected service.

Know the document’s weak spots

  • Scanned pages may require optical character recognition.
  • Tables can lose relationships when converted to plain text.
  • Long documents may be split into sections, so a response may miss relevant passages.
  • Instructions inside a document are content to analyse, not permission to take unrelated actions.

Keep your own judgement

Use the tool to navigate and draft, then verify the points that matter. For a consequential decision, consult the original material and a qualified person where appropriate. A faster reading workflow should still leave you able to explain why you trust the result.
