What is an AI harness? The model’s working environment

By Local AI Scout · Beginner guide

An AI harness is the surrounding software that gives a model instructions, tools, context and a way to act. The model produces outputs; the harness decides how those outputs connect to a workflow.

A useful distinction

Think of three layers: the model, the interface and the tools. In a simple chat, you supply a prompt and read a reply. In an agent workflow, the surrounding software may let the model inspect files, call tools, keep track of steps and request permission to act.

Why the harness matters

The same model can behave differently in two environments. The available tools, instructions, context handling and approval rules shape what it can attempt. A strong model with an unsuitable workflow can still be frustrating to use.

Local model does not mean local everything

A harness can send requests to a local model while also using online search or remote services. Look at the complete tool list. Jan’s documentation, for example, separates the desktop application from its standalone coding agent; the product boundary matters.

Questions before you connect tools

  • Which files and folders can it read?
  • Can it modify files or run commands?
  • Which actions require approval?
  • Does any connector send information to another service?
  • Can you inspect the activity and undo changes?

Start with a small workspace

For a first experiment, use a copy of a simple, non-sensitive project. Give the agent one bounded task and inspect its proposed changes. Expand the workflow when you understand its permissions and failure modes.
